Port Chalmers, Otago   ...1 of 8 >
Port Chalmers is the picturesque container port that serves Otago and Dunedin.  The first container ship visited in 1971 before the container terminal had been built.  In 1977 Prime Minister Robert Muldoon officially opened the container terminal.  According to the Port Otago Limited Annual Report 2013, the port "is currently the deepest container port in New Zealand with a depth of 13 metres at chart datum or low tide."  Plans are underway to increase the depth to 14 metres.  For the financial year ending June 30, 2013, "Container throughput of 195,400 teu (twenty foot equivalent units) was 14% higher than the previous year."  In addition to container ships, Port Chalmers handles cruise liners (84 visited in financial year 2013) and conventional cargoes, notably log exports.
