| Telstra
Tower (formerly known as the Black
Mountain Communications Tower), is the iconic
telecommunications tower atop Black Mountain.
The tower opened in May 1980 and stands
195.2 metres tall. A rotating
restaurant, Alto, closed in Feb. 2013.
After being labeled an "embarrassment" the
entire tower closed to the public for
maintenance and repairs in July 2021, and
there was no apparent activity for several
years. In June 2024 the ACT
Government announced it would work with
Telstra to reopen the tower; renovations are
scheduled to be completed in March 2026.
