Zealand Marine Studies Centre at Portobello,
part of the University of Otago's Department of
Marine Science (1,
2), provides a base
for research and hosts educational programs and
tours (>).
The University acquired the site in 1951; it traces
back to a fish hatchery established in 1904.

Blue cod (Parapercis colias)
is a bottom dwelling New Zealand fish. See

Pipefish are closely related to
seahorses (family Syngnathidae).

The old public aquarium was closed in
2012 and demolished in 2016 after it was determined
it did not meet earthquake standards. A
temporary teaching and research facility now

The colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis
hamiltoni) lives in the Southern Ocean.
There used to be a model here. A specimen is
displayed at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
in Auckland.
