Dunedin's Magic Skies

Aotearoa translates from Māori as "land of the long white cloud."  I don't know about the rest of New Zealand, but Dunedin truly has the "magic skies."  In the morning when one walks out the front door one can expect to see interesting cloud formations.  It is very common to see a sky with several different types of clouds in various shades of gray (+).  Sometimes there is one set of clouds in one direction and a very different set in the opposite direction.  And, as the saying goes, here one can experience all four (or maybe it is six?) seasons in a single day.  Along with the diversity, however, gray skies are more common; Dunedin receives less total sunshine hours than many locations around New Zealand (NIWA figures show a mean annual value of 1,776 hours of total sunshine, while Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch range from 2,094 to 2,128 hours).  In Los Angeles, although there are some nice sunsets, the weather is very bland, with over 250 sunny days per year.
