Much Better than
Signs: An Active Office
|
 |
In
contrast to the Future Dunedin office, which is
usually closed, The People's Hub office at the
corner of George Street and Moray Place has
regular business hours and a welcoming
ambiance. Twenty progressive candidates for
DCC, Mayor and ORC are represented, including
independents, Greens, Building Kotahitaka, and The
Radical Action Faction. Independent ORC candidate Alex King
initiated the idea, talked with some of the
candidates, found support, and the office opened 1
September. Above: ORC member Alan
Somerville (Green), DCC candidate Jen Olsen (Radical
Action Faction), DCC candidate Heike Cebulla-Elder
(Independent), Alex King, and ORC candidate Phil
Glassey (Independent) at the office.

24 September - There's always
something new. To the right of the door, the
table shows Dunedin's low turnout thus far: Dunedin
3.9%, Chch 11.4%, Invers 12.8%, Nelson 9.7%, Welly
6.4%, Palmy N 10.4%, Hamilton -, Auckland 6.0%.

Alex King at his desk at The People's
Hub. On the desk are flyers for his campaign,
the Greens, the list of 20 progressive candidates
represented, and the Building Kotahikitaka
flyers. Interestingly, the list of candidates
was organized by age, from youngest to oldest; this
was an effort to encourage and connect with young
voters. King provided some background on the
finances. To rent the space for a month and a
half cost NZ$3,000 (about US$1,800); it was ready to
go except for Internet. For his own campaign
he had 5,000 flyers printed up at a cost of about
NZ$800 (about US$480).

2 October - Alex King has been
keeping track of turnout in major cities in the
local body elections, and Dunedin has been lagging
consistently. King had just posted the figures
for the previous day.

 |
9 October - Phil Glassey, Independent
candidate for ORC, removes election signage from
windows of the Peoples Hub as required by DCC
Dunedin
City Second Generation District Plan (2GP). Rule
4.5.7.2, which states signs "must be removed
by midnight prior to election or polling day."
