Speight's, established in 1876 and one of Dunedin's signature enterprises, is part of the Japanese holding company Lion.  In 1923, facing the threat of Prohibition, Speight's and other breweries merged to form New Zealand Breweries Ltd., which later become Lion Breweries, then Lion Nathan, which Kirin Holdings Company Limited acquired in 2009.
The redeveloped Speight's Brewery was officially opened by Prime Minister John Key on Feb. 25, 2014.
It is a fairly common sight to see people filling their bottles with water from the Speight's Brewery well.
Steinlager beer brand is also owned by Lion.

Southern Clams specializes in harvesting and selling littleneck clams, tuaki or tuangi (Austrovenus stutchburyi).

A lot of metalworking firms operate in the industrial side of the city.

Gold still plays a role in Dunedin's economy, as workers are bused to OceanaGold's mine at Macraes Flat, about an hour and 15 minutes north of the city.  The mine opened in 1990.
