Children's books in Māori language at Dunedin Library, and a brochure on the Māori Language Movement (ReoMāori.co.nz) from Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori, the Maori Language Commission (www.tetaurawhiri.govt.nz), which was created by the Māori Language Act 1987.  The Act made Māori an official language.
At the University of Otago, Te Tumu , the School of  Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies was originally established in 1990 as the Department of Māori Studies.
Cast aluminum sculpture of a gateway, Ko te Tūhono by Ayesha Green, was installed in the Octagon in November 2021.
Statue of Scottish poet Robert Burns in the center of the Octagon is one of four by John Steell and was installed in 1887.
Plaques highlighting Dunedin writers are situated around the statue of Robert Burns in the Octagon.
