University of Otago graduation ceremonies occurred on 14 December and the campus was quiet during summer break.
A plaque below states, "In the 1970's a young PhD student from University of Otago, Denis Laurne, discovered a new compound found in the leaves of  Rimu trees.  Its unique chemical structure has four rings sharing a central carbon atom and is called fenestrane as it resembles a window with four panes.  The compound was subsequently named Laurenene and its chemical structure is depicted in the sign above."

Historian Tony Ballantyne has been influential in "reshaping scholarly thought on British imperial history."

Te Tumu was originally established in 1990 as the Department of Māori Studies.

Hocken Collections (Uare Taoka o Hākena) is "one of New Zealand's foremost research libraries and contains many rare historical publications of national and international significance, as well as manuscripts, pictures and photographs."
